Current Scholarships available for 2012 graduates

Message from Scholarship coordinator:

YV-Tech students:

Many of you will be continuing your education following high school. It is important to start early to find a school that will meet your needs. Many scholarships are offered by post secondary institutions and community organizations. Do your homework and learn when the deadlines are for applications.

Things you can do now, whether you are a junior or senior is working on the following:

  • Leadership skills and activites:

Join a club; work on a committee; run for office; design and implement a project

  • Community Service:

If you have never done any community service, start now to find a worthy cause that can use your talents and skills, or maybe just willing hands to accomplish something good for our community. Document your participation and keep records of how much time you contribute

  • Volunteer work:

If you have never volunteered, now is the time to start. You can do something for someone else, and gain the satisfaction of helping someone in need, and valuable skills for life!

  • Work Experience:

If you have a paying job, you are developing many practical skills and experiences. Be sure to be a "super" employee, one that your employer or supervisor can boast about. Be on time. Be there every shift. Do your job exceptionally well. Work well with others. See what needs to be done and do it without having to be told every time. You get more then a paycheck from work experience. You develop skills that will help you manage your time well as you juggle school, work, and family responsibilities.

  • Letters of recommendation:

Be thinking of who knows you well, and can speak directly about your skills and talents. Choose someone who can write well! Give them plenty of time to write and send letters. Ask for extra copies addressed "To whom it may concern," that you can use for other applications.

Some scholarships are available for juniors, but most are for seniors.

  • Research scholarships that you are eligible for:

- Your high school counselor may post a list at school or on a website.

Davis High School’s link below has an extensive list that is updated monthly:

http://schools.yakimaschools.org/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=4593&

- Sign up for a search like "TheWashboard" or "Fastweb".

- Research your post-secondary school's options.

- Research organizations of professionals in the field you intend to pursue.

- Sign up for random drawings for scholarship money.

  • Order transcripts early
  • Write essay responses that answer the questions and tell your unique story. Proof read! Have someone else proof read for you. Proof read again!!!
  • Visit this site often to watch for scholarships that are particularly suited to YV-Tech students.
